Kahuku Wind is building on Hawaii’s longstanding tradition of self-sufficiency, capturing the natural wind resource to provide a renewable and local energy solution. Kahuku Wind will consist of 12 state-of-the-art wind turbines that will produce 30 MW (megawatts) of power. That’s enough clean, renewable energy to power nearly 7,700 homes on Oahu. The project will also include an innovative battery energy storage system to assist in smoothing fluctuations in wind energy output. Kahuku Wind broke ground on July 13, 2010 and is currently under construction. The project is expected to be in operation in early 2011.
The Kahuku Wind team continues to meet with community members, public officials, organizations, and institutions to discuss the benefits of wind energy for the state of Hawaii and to the Kahuku community. We welcome your participation in this dialogue.
Hu ka makani! The wind blows towards a sustainable future for our keiki!
